This website was founded with the intention of providing SEO support to every atheist website in the world. Our Facebook group exclusively for atheists who engage in civil and respectful communication has grown into the largest in the world. This initiative, conceived and maintained by Brian Sapient, a dedicated activist at the forefront of the "New Atheism" movement, has come at significant personal sacrifice. However, it stands as a heartfelt testament to humanity and has undeniably been a labor of love that was well worth the effort.

== Why We Have Stringent Starter Post Guidelines ==
We've established a set of rules for starter post guidelines in our group to serve specific purposes and ensure a valuable experience for the members of [https://www.facebook.com/groups/atheismunited Atheism United] FB group. Our most popular posts often reach over 10,000 people, and we believe it's in your best interest to follow our submission guidelines to maximize the reach of your content. By doing so, you not only give people the opportunity to see your post but also help Facebook and our community recognize the value of the content we produce. If a group has too many posts that don't garner engagement, it can reduce the overall reach of a group. We work hard to ensure that all posts create some level of engagement in order to ensure that everything of importance to our community gets seen by as many people as possible.

=== Understanding Facebook's Algorithm ===
We have gained a deep understanding of the Facebook algorithm, particularly in how it prioritizes the initial engagement of a post within the first 100 views, encompassing likes and comments. The algorithm's assessment of a post's worthiness, based on this initial response, plays a pivotal role in determining its visibility to a broader audience. This knowledge significantly influences our guidelines, ensuring our content reaches more people.

The algorithm essentially decides a post's fate during this crucial early 100 view phase, determining whether it gains widespread visibility or remains obscure. In essence, whether a post flourishes or remains unseen by most hinges on this initial interaction.

It's essential to recognize that within our group, approximately 80% of members view posts based on whether Facebook decides to display them on their home feeds. Only a small portion of our group actively visits the group to skim through all the content. Consequently, it's vital for the algorithm to favor your post, as this greatly influences its reach and visibility. Posts that fail to garner sufficient engagement are subject to removal to maintain the quality of content within our group.

=== Creating Engagement and Optimizing Posts ===
Generating engagement in our group is crucial to ensuring that your content reaches a broader audience and aligns with our goal to unite atheists from diverse backgrounds. '''One of the most effective ways to foster engagement is by asking the audience a question.''' People naturally enjoy sharing their thoughts and experiences, and this approach provides an opportunity to see how various opinions within our community align or differ.

When posting in our group, it's important to consider that you likely want your content to be seen by others. We recognize that some users may not read your entire post and might choose to comment based on what captures their attention, posting a question in bold increases the likelihood of engagement, and embraces the spirit of learning about other atheists viewpoints.

Additionally, '''including a meme related to your content within the post can encourage more shares''', even if readers don't fully engage with the text. By optimizing your posts in this manner, you enhance the chances of your content reaching a wider audience and aligning with our group's mission.

When a post fails to garner engagement, it’s not seen by more than 100 people. 80% of group members see posts in this group based on if FB sends it to your wall. Only a small portion of our group visits the group and skims all content. Our group's priority is to advance our views through the viral nature of social media. We need to make sure that posts in our group are strong and capable of generating engagement. This helps strengthen our overall algorithmic worth and ensures that our content continues to reach more people.

'''TIP:''' We find the most successful posts use the "[https://www.facebook.com/help/1824001514537829 Facebook Background Color]" feature and are questions limited to 130 characters. A simple question for the group in the first post is an excellent way to start a conversation that will reach thousands of people. If you have a perspective on the topic, or a link related to the question, simply respond to your own post in the comments.

=== Exceptions to the Rule ===
While you may come across posts without a question, these are exceptions that we estimate will naturally generate enough engagement to be seen by others. Our priority is to maintain a high standard of content in our group, ensuring that posts are fact-based or presented as opinions with fairness.

=== Refusing to Engage in Anger Bait or Clickbait Practices ===
At Atheism United, we uphold a commitment to maintaining high standards in our content and interactions with our community. While we aim to enhance the visibility of our posts, we firmly refuse to resort to tactics such as anger bait or clickbait. Some viral posts exploit anger and frustration to achieve engagement, but we hold our members in high regard and refuse to employ such strategies. This principled stance is the reason we request members to ensure their initial posts are either fact-based or prefaced as personal opinions. It's also why we occasionally reframe posts to present topics from a more balanced perspective and post them from our admin account. Additionally, moderators work hard to keep up with contentious topics and help add clarity when posts lead to arguments. We try to avoid posts which are likely to create this moderation need. Learn more about our rules and moderation in the [[Atheism United Facebook Group FAQ]].

== Posts Likely to Garner No Engagement ==

All of these posts will likely be rejected. Please note our improvement advice.

* Educational text intended to inform without asking an audience-engaging question and lacking a meme.
* Including a link to a YouTube video (to improve, consider finding a Facebook autoplay video instead).
* Sharing content from another Facebook group without recreating it as a new and original post in our group (to improve, ask the audience a question when sharing external content).
* Posting a link to an article in your initial post (to improve, use a meme in your initial post and provide the article link in the comments after your post is approved).

== Starter Post Submission Guidelines ==
When submitting a starter post in our group, please follow these guidelines to ensure a valuable experience for our members:

* Explain your perspective or view on the issue you're discussing, or ask the group a question related to any issue.
* Ensure that your post is fact-based and clearly distinguish matters of opinion by prefacing them as your personal views.
* Encourage engagement by asking a question that invites discussion.
* Use English with the best grammar you can muster to promote effective communication.
* Submit your post directly to the group rather than sharing it from elsewhere.
* Posts about religion should be personal, sharing your experiences or seeking help, rather than serving as arguments against religion.
* Avoid simply posting a link to an article or video. Instead, provide a summary of your viewpoint and/or ask the audience a specific question. Please note that videos that autoplay on Facebook are given priority over outbound YouTube videos in our selection process.
* We carefully select posts for approval and aim to maintain a balance between news, memes, and personal stories. Please understand that we receive numerous religion-related submissions, and we may have to decline some of them.
* Religion is a significant topic for some members, but it's important to remember that it's involved in less than 10% of the lives of 92% of atheists in our group. We encourage you to discuss other aspects of your life, following the rules outlined above.
* While we can't provide post improvement suggestions for every submission, we may decline your post with recommendations. Please watch for our feedback, make necessary alterations, and resubmit. Note that some users report not receiving our feedback due to Facebook-related issues.
* Feel free to post about topics you're curious about, your personal experiences, your perspectives on the news, or any subject of interest. However, always engage the audience by asking a question or encouraging their involvement. For instance, if you share a picture of your pet, ask others to post pictures of their pets. Merely sharing personal anecdotes is better suited for your personal wall, while engaging the largest atheist group in the world is well-suited for our group.
* Introduction posts are approved when they share your story and include a specific question or thought to inspire comments.
* If your post submission doesn't meet our guidelines, it might be reposted from the Atheism United account with the proper formatting, and you will be credited.
* By following these format concepts, your post is more likely to be approved.

Please adhere to these guidelines when making starter posts to contribute to a valuable and engaging experience for our community.
Brianhttp://www.atheismunited.com/wiki/An_open_letter_to_atheists_of_AmericaAn open letter to atheists of America2023-10-27T17:18:20Z
Brian: Protected "An open letter to atheists of America": High traffic page ([Edit=Allow only administrators] (indefinite) [Move=Allow only administrators] (indefinite))

Dear American Atheists,

What level of concern do you have for the direction that America is heading? Are you ensuring that you’re helping to stop the advancement of Christian Nationalism in America? [https://www.facebook.com/groups/atheismunited/posts/6779869545425587/ Join the atheist-only Facebook discussion here.]

We believe it is essential for you to be involved in the upcoming elections and ensure that you stop the rise of Christian Nationalism. While this plea is specifically for our American audience, there are some similarities in this story to others from around the world.

Through group polling, we’ve seen that about 80% of our group identifies with left-leaning politics, about 10% are centrist, and about 10% are right-leaning. While we know well that the only thing that atheists must have in common is their shared lack of belief in a god, rejecting religious right wing values is an area of vast agreement within the atheist community.

We understand that some of our members may disagree with our decision to come out decidedly against Republican candidates. We apologize for any alienation this may cause, but we assure you that we value all of our members and consider you an important part of our community. However, the stakes and the costs to atheists if we say nothing are too high.

As a team, we’re not outright endorsing any specific candidate, but we are suggesting that our group members ensure that they use their voice and their vote to push back against Christian extremism in America (and religious extremism around the world).

Over the years, we have seen a steady erosion of protections, especially as it relates to freedom from monotheistic religion in places funded by our tax dollars. This has been exacerbated by the Republican Party’s hypocritical selection process for Supreme Court justices, which has resulted in a 5-4 Conservative majority that includes all 5 Conservative Justices having ties to the Federalist Society, a group that seeks to interpret the Constitution more favorably towards Christians at the expense of secular freedom.

We saw this firsthand in the unprecedented overturning of a previous SCOTUS ruling in Roe v. Wade, an issue that 87% of atheists believe should be legal in all cases.

The Republican Party is also backing candidates who embrace the Seven Mountain Mandate, an evangelical group that seeks to invade every area of society with their “message from god.” This includes Ted Cruz, who has gotten involved in school board elections which seek to place Christian extremists in power to remake the public education of our children, which will stifle scientific learning and supplant it with Christian indoctrination.

The Republican Party has consistently worked with the Heritage Foundation, which has recently released “Project 2025.” Heritage outlines a plan to further Christian Nationalism in America and help the next Republican President overhaul government on day one by replacing those people who will uphold and defend the Constitution with people who will embrace a Christian set of values first and foremost. Project 2025 has been characterized as “a plan to install Trump as a dictator, warning that Trump could prosecute and imprison enemies or overthrow American democracy altogether,” if undefeated “would place the nation on a path to autocracy.” Brynn Tannehill, for Dame magazine, argued that the 902-page document "The Mandate for Leadership" in part "makes eradicating LGBTQ people from public life its top priority"

If we do not push back against Christian Nationalism now, we could see a number of worst-case scenarios for atheists in the upcoming years. These could include:

- The loss of our right to access reproductive healthcare.

- The loss of our right to freedom of speech and expression.

- The degradation of our school system and scientific education.

- The rise of state-sponsored religious discrimination and indoctrination.

- The dismantling of US Climate policy which is already weaker than the science suggests it should be.

- And much worse, feel free to talk about your worst fears in the comments.

We cannot afford to let these things happen. We must get involved in the upcoming elections and vote against Christian Nationalism.

Here are some things you can do to help:

- Register to vote and make sure your friends and family are registered to vote.

- Research the candidates running for office and find out where they stand on issues that are important to you.

- The list of Republicans willing to embrace the Constitution and secular values over Christianity is small. To protect atheists, we are asking for you to use your vote to ensure that Republican candidates are unable to win their elections.

- Understand your local elections! These candidates don’t always have a party affiliation on the ballot. It’s imperative that you protect your local community first, as extremism is making bigger headway at the local level.

- Donate to candidates who support religious freedom and the rights of atheists.

- Volunteer your time to help campaigns that are fighting against Christian Nationalism.

- Remember: Your voice matters. Your vote matters. Let’s stand together against extremism for a better future.

Sincerely,

We wanted to help clear up a common misconception about evolution in hopes of furthering science today. Evolution is a multifaceted term that is a theory, a fact, and a process all rolled into one.

'''Evolution as a Theory:''' In science, a theory isn't just a hunch – it's a well-established explanation supported by evidence and repeated observation. The theory of evolution explains how species change over time. It's supported by significant evidence from multiple disciplines including fossils, genetics, and observations of living creatures. One common misconception is that a scientific theory isn't as strong as a scientific law. To be clear: laws describe things we observe in nature (i.e. the speed of light) while theories provide explanations for the observed behavior.

'''Evolution as a Fact:''' '''''Evolution is also a scientific fact.''''' It's backed by a wealth of evidence that shows species have changed and diversified over millions of years. Fossils provide a rich record of ancient life forms, showcasing the transitions and adaptations that various organisms have undergone over millions of years. Additionally, DNA studies unveil intricate connections between different species, offering a molecular blueprint that supports the interconnectedness of all life on Earth. These pieces of evidence, combined with observations of natural selection in action and the convergence of findings from paleontology, genetics, embryology, and comparative anatomy, collectively form a robust body of data that overwhelmingly substantiates the theory of evolution. The evidence for evolution is so robust that it's accepted by the scientific community worldwide as a fact.

'''Evolution as a Process:''' Evolution is an ongoing process that occurs through natural selection. Here's how it works: living organisms have variations due to genetic mutations. Some of these variations help organisms survive and reproduce better in their environment. Over time, these beneficial traits become more common in a population. This process, called natural selection, leads to the gradual changes in species we observe.

'''Summary:''' evolution is a theory that explains how species change, a fact based on solid evidence, and a process we continue to observe over time that drives the diversity of life on our planet.

Thanks for reading and I hope you're able share the knowledge with someone who needs to hear it. Keep exploring, questioning, and seeking knowledge – that's what it's all about!
Brianhttp://www.atheismunited.com/wiki/Prove_that_you_are_an_atheistProve that you are an atheist2023-09-27T14:22:31Z
Brian:

Here is a response that you can freely use when a theist asks you to "prove that you are an atheist."

Atheism is simply the lack of belief in any gods or divine beings. It is not a positive claim that no gods exist, but a negative one that there is no sufficient evidence or reason to believe that any gods exist. Therefore, when I say that I am an atheist, I am not making a statement about the reality of the world, but about my own psychological state. I am telling you what I do not believe, not what I know or can prove.

To prove that I am an atheist, all I need to do is to honestly report my own mental attitude towards the proposition “God exists”. Of course, you may doubt my sincerity or question my motives, but that is a different issue. You may also ask me why I do not believe in God, and I can give you some reasons that led me to my conclusion. But those reasons are not proof of my atheism, they are just explanations of how I came to lack belief.

On the other hand, theism is a positive claim that at least one god exists. It is a statement about the reality of the world, not just about one’s own psychological state. To prove that a god exists, one needs to provide some evidence or argument that supports the existence of a god. This evidence or argument must be objective, verifiable, and consistent with the available facts. It must also be able to withstand logical scrutiny and possible objections. Otherwise, it is not a proof, but a mere assertion or opinion.

Therefore, asking me to prove that I am an atheist is not analogous to asking you to prove that God exists. The former is a request for personal information, the latter is a demand for objective justification. The former can be satisfied by a simple declaration, the latter requires a rigorous demonstration. The former does not imply any burden of proof, the latter does. The former is based on subjective experience, the latter is based on objective reality. Unless of course you’d like to argue that god is subjectively real inside of your mind, and not actually real in reality. I am happy to accept your claim that god only exists inside of your mind.

My atheism is based on my lack of belief in a god. You can either accept that or not. I respect your claim of theism, and for this conversation, we should respect each other’s claims about our own psychological states. If you don’t accept mine, that’s fine, but then we have no basis for further discussion.
45. I stopped believing in fairy tales far too late and I’m not going to start again.

46. That's not up to me. The burden of proof lies with the person making the claim.

47. Because religion was invented when the first conman met the first gullible fool.

48. There is not sufficient evidence to warrant the belief that any god or gods exist in reality.

49. Because it's people's make-believe emotions and fears and desire to make it to happyland.

51. I don't explain why I don't believe in fairy tales, but I would guess it's because I'm not insane.

52. Just because we can't explain our existence doesn't give us the right to make stuff up to try and explain it.

53. We have stories of so many different gods in different eras and areas, which helps prove their human origins.

54. Where was God before organized religion 12,000 years ago, never mind 5.5 billion years or 17.5 billion years?
